MEDITATION

Meditation by Eknath Easwaran

The author came from India in the sixties and was a major force in the acceptance and popularity of meditation in the United States. In this book, he outlines a simple 8-point plan for becoming more focused, loving, and joyful in your life. If you feel like your life is too fast and too busy, and you can commit to 30 minutes every day, this is a great meditation plan. I use it in my life daily and have found great benefits.

Take Your Time by Eknath Easwaran

This book is very similar to his meditation book (above), but with less instruction on how to meditate and a greater focus on slowing down in daily life. Some advice is very practical, such as not creating too many "responsibilities" for yourself (eg., have you ever subscribed to so many magazines that you feel burdened about getting through them all). If you are new to meditation, I suggest the other book as a start, and if you like it, read this for more of the same in greater depth.

Meditation Made Easy by Lorin Roche

One of the most imortant "rules" of meditation is that there is no one way to do it. Meditation is different for everyone. I found it good to start with some ideas that others have used and then over time developed my own methods. This is a book chock full of fun ideas for the beginning meditator. It's very easy to read, good information, and all from a very Western point of view. Described as "come-as-you-are" meditation.

Journey Of Awakening by Ram Dass

Ram Dass is an American psychologist and spiritual teacher who has studied and practiced meditation for many years. Here he shares his understanding and explores the many paths of meditation--from mantra, prayer, singing, visualizations, and "just sitting" to movement meditations such as tai chi--and suggests how you can find methods suitable for you. This is the first meditation book I ever read, and I found it very easy to read, amusing, and helpful.

TAI CHI

Tai Chi for health (Video) featuring Terrence Dunn

A great introduction to T'ai Chi, with historical background, warm-up, postures, and Long Form Style demonstration.

BREATHING

The Breathing Book by Donna Farhi

Breathing is elemental to good health. Sounds obvious, but most of have spent years learning how to breathe poorly through bad posture and tension. This book offers good advice on how to identify and remove habitual stress patterns that encourage shallow or restricted breathing.
